Age Well Roehampton (Hestia) is a service which is commissioned for people over 55 years of age,  who live in Roehampton, with activities and signposting to other helpful services as required.  To promote health and wellbeing, organise and facilitate activities/special events, liaise with other local community groups and receive referrals from Social Prescribers.  To enrol, please call Jenny Bailey on 07826 779684.

There is no membership fee, but we require a completed application form to ensure the criteria for membership is adhered to and so that we can regularly keep in touch with individuals and ensure that essential information is disseminated to all who have signed up.  Currently, there are 35 members. Members will be advised of outings, musical events and importantly advice on age-related concerns. Looking forward to meeting you!

Introducing Estate Art

Estate Art is a new organisation on The Alton Estate created in April 2021 to involve residents of all ages in activities and events that fight loneliness, deter crime – especially violence against women – and boost mental health.

To counter these effects, Estate Art identifies projects, works them up into proposals for funding and presents them to Wandsworth and to the many organisations and companies who are keen to support the community but do not have a means of channelling that support. Our most recent project – The Pop-Up Panels of Art in Roehampton – won The Wandsworth Arts Fringe Audience Choice Award 2021.

Estate Art has been set up as a not-for-profit company to allow it to receive funding and distribute it to the artists, musicians and others involved. A very small percentage of the funding is used to finance the company’s running expenses such as insurance and accountancy. It has no salaried staff.

Estate Art is run on a voluntary basis by Lynne Capocciama – a long term resident well known on the Estate. Through her experience as a carer, she has experienced at first hand the destructive effects of isolation, failure to engage with the community and reluctance to become part of the social fabric of the Estate. As a result of her voluntary work, this year she has received a Community Champion Award and her name has been added to The Mayor of Wandsworth’s Roll of Honour.

Projects

Our first major project was the Pop-Up Panel of Art Exhibition on a hoarding erected by Wandsworth on the side of a largely disused residential and retail building in Danebury Avenue. Seven local schools and fourteen local artists created artwork on metal panels that Estate Art prepared and helped to install. The project was supported by Wandsworth Council, Roehampton Community Week, Waitrose, the Co-Op and Marks & Spencer.

In November 2021 we mounted an exhibition in three local pubs* of paintings in support of White Ribbon Day. The paintings are designed to celebrate women and raise awareness of the campaign to reduce violence against women. The project has been funded by The Wandsworth Grant Fund.

Witley Point Activity Wall

Also in November, we are repainting the flaking Activity Wall at Witley Point on the Alton Estate with the generous support of Roehampton Club. One side of the wall has already been repainted.

Christmas Tree Project

In December we will return to Danebury Avenue with seven large panels on which the shape of Christmas Trees and stars have been decorated by the staff and children of eight local schools. The panels will be on show for a month spanning the Christmas period.

Home is where the heArt is.

Estate Art have recently launched a project involving 10 schools/organisations, using doors and hearts to depict how a home makes you feel. The work is displayed around the estate and also includes a message to our Queen a huge piece of artwork of the Queen where EstateArt collaborated with the community to write a message for the Queen on small hearts.

Updates on initiatives – September 2021:  

1. Rackets Cubed programmes have re-started and are seeing a lot of interest. The Roehampton area remains our ‘heart’ and we hope to launch five to eight programmes over the coming weeks.

Confirmed hosts are Roehampton Club, LTA/ NTC, Roehampton University and hopefully, Ibstock School Schools taking part are Sacred Heart, Heathmere, Alton, Grannard and East Sheen primary while we are in discussions with several new sites in Wandsworth and Merton.

2. Roehampton / Queenstown Road Community Box programmes

• Hubs in Roehampton and at Griffin Primary School (Queenstown Road) are seeing an increase in need and are expanding
• Roehampton Hub is now located at 166 Roehampton Lane and has a local manager running it.

3. Roehampton Community Week programme was a huge success with over 50 groups involved and 40 projects. We raised £100k in total – £60k cash, and £40k in contribution in kind. There was significant engagement (and funding support) with important local partners – Wandsworth Council, Roehampton University, Roehampton Club, AELTC, Ibstock Place School, Parish Trust and we are investing heavily into developing the community capacity and cohesion in the Roehampton area. Work is going on to encourage partnership working between community groups to maximise impact.

4. In- School Delivery programme took place throughout the summer term at ten schools and it was our schools the LTA / NTC used as part of the BBC / Sky media events post Emma Raducanu success.

Andy Smith Co-Founders Story

I moved onto the Alton estate in 1996 with a group of friends. The estate is huge. One of the biggest housing estates in Europe.

Not long after living on the estate and becoming friends with people in the area through a football team a few of us were involved with, I began to see and hear about some of the negative things that went on in the community where we lived.

I heard about older people that had not been out of their homes for over 20 years and were living in isolation and fear. I saw kids riding stolen mopeds around the estate, cars and houses getting burnt out, drugs available all over the place and people getting robbed on the street.

My friends and I began to dream, pray and scheme about what we could do to make a difference in the area. It started small, with a desire to see a change in our community, a few prayers, good friends and ideas.

In January 2000, we formed Regenerate, a Christian faith-based charity. We started it with my Mum, Mo. She helped manage the finances and administration and myself and a group of friends started setting up and running projects that would serve the community.

The work began by organising a lunch club for the older people in the area. We rented a church hall and employed a cook and within a few weeks, we had 100 regular members. Older people that had been isolated beforehand.

We then started developing projects for young people and children, such as, football clubs, dance and homework clubs, minibus trips out of London, a Juice Bar drop-in youth centre, a music studio, mentoring schemes and trips for young people to volunteer in developing countries.

Over the years we have also been taking what has begun in Roehampton to many other estates around South West London by using our Double-decker bus (a mobile youth centre) and have helped others to initiate projects in their own communities.

In 2006 Regenerate RISE was established as a separate charity to focus on developing the work with the elderly.

Today Regenerate continues to focus on the estates in and around Roehampton as well as helping and supporting others who are initiating similar projects on estates across London.

We believe in the potential that lies within every individual to change their lives and in doing so the lives of those around them.

Roehampton Community Week Fund (RCWF) is a concept created by the Roehampton Community Week (RCW) steering committee under the guidance of Jonathan Palma (Citizens Advice Wandsworth) in the summer of 2021, after the success of the first ever RCW. The RCW raised approximately £50,000 in funding with half going towards the delivery of over 30 events and legacy projects and the other half going towards a local community fund and RCW 2022. This fund would ensure sustainability of RCW’s objectives and address the following:

• The accessibility to high demand services in the area
• Increasing the community’s interest of the wellbeing of the area
• Ensuring engagement and unity within Roehampton.

To sought and fund these projects the Roehampton Community Week Fund was created.

The PGMP makes the grant application process more accessible for those who do not have experience in conventional funding applications.

RCWF offers up to £1000 in funding for grassroots community groups. A simplified application is sent to candidates, and assistance is provided if needed. The candidates are given the opportunity to present their projects to the RCW Steering committee if they chose to, however this is not necessary, but it aids any unanswered questions or feedback the committee have.

The committee then feedback their votes and comments anonymously to decide whether the projects will be approved funding.

RCWF has been highly successful, and is contributing to a thriving voluntary sector in Roehampton, allowing for the committee to continue meeting RCW intended long term objectives:

• To integrate delivery and co-ordination with local community groups, organisations, Council departments and Councillors.
• To develop communal areas and shared office space to address social isolation
• To improve health and wellbeing of local residents.
• To build lasting capacity and community strength.

The first round of the RCWF ended on November 12th and a total of 15 applications were received which is a great number for an area with little history of community groups applying for funding.

Created in the first week of lockdown in March to provide a platform for forward planning, communication and co-ordination of response to and recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and wider issues in Roehampton and Wandsworth.  

The network’s meetings discuss serious topics that affect the community, such as poverty, mental health, relationship building, partnership working and much much more.
